                           HOW DRUG ADDICTION WORKS

What is drug addiction, which is a very serious problem today? How this disease, which threatens especially young people, occurs and how it progresses? According to studies conducted by experts as of 2021, unfortunately more than 36 million people in the world are in the grip of this disease. Drug addiction, reaches these poor people in different ways, but the way it works and the inevitable end is the same for all of them. Addiction enters the human body through a variety of pathways and substances and takes over over time.

First of all, in the human body there is a region of the brain called the reward system, or nucleus accumbens as it is called in medicine. This center is responsible for the release of dopamine, a very important hormone for the human body and for the events that the body needs, such as eating, drinking water and sexual activity, so when the body needs something and meets that need, the reward system registers it and dopamine is released in neurons. This is a very ordinary cycle for the human body, but some drugs that cause addiction take over the system and there is an excessive increase in the release of dopamine. The excessive release of dopamine caused by drugs eventually desensitizes the reward system, which can no longer respond to everyday stimuli, but only to the only rewarding thing: drugs.

Secondly, there are different substances that cause drug addiction, such as heroin, nicotine, methamphetamine, cocaine, and alcohol. These substances enter the body in ways such as oral ingestion, injection into bloodstream, inhalation, and absorption and interfere with human body.

In addition, according to the scientists, the faster a drug reaches the brain and affects the reward center, the more addictive it is. For example, heroin and morphine have similar effects, but heroin exceeds the reward system faster and acts more quickly, so heroin is more addictive than morphine.

Last but not least, drug addiction, which relapses into the body's reward system, increases the amount of

dopamine in the body through drugs such as heroin, cocaine, nicotine, etc. and causes destructive effects.

Recovering from the ravages of drug addiction is a difficult and lengthy process.
